Did you know that ‘Bean Ultach’ is not only the Irish for Ulster Woman but also an Irish term for ‘witch’. I love that. As a goth around the north coast in the 90s, ‘witch’ was something I got called a lot. I never took it as an insult but the older I got the more I realised how powerful that was… women who for centuries scared the patriarchy with their wisdom, intelligence, independence, their very existence, to the extent that the patriarchy tried to destroy them.

Being an O’Neill of course the Red Hand was something I was aware of since I was a little kid, it’s in our coat of arms, often known as the ‘Red Hand of the O’Neills’. A complex and powerful symbol of Ulster. But it was always a man’s hand.

Of course the #Éadach Lámh Dhearg/ Red Hand is a woman’s hand. The hand of the Bean Ultach. A homage to the strong Ulster Women we know & love. The ones who have held this society together through the shittest of times. And more than that, to women beyond Ulster who stand up for what they believe in, live life on their own terms, are given shit for doing so but keep on going.

The triskele on the wrist taps into Morrigan mythology, the triple goddess, female power. Maiden, Mother, Crone.

As soon as they arrived one went straight onto the lapel of my fave Bella Freud trench, alongside my antique Tara brooch & 25 year old SHARP pin, bought at a gig in Giros back in the day.
