We live near the beautiful Whiterocks beach, and walk there most days with our dog, Blyton. When walking on the cliffs one day, my fiancé Al (who as a big wave surfer has an extremely detailed knowledge of the coastlines in Ireland and far beyond) pointed to a dark shadow just under the water and told me this was a shipwreck, no more than fifteen foot off the beach. After a bit of research I discovered it was the Devereux, a cargo ship which got into trouble in 1864 off the coast of Malin Head, where the crew jumped off. The abandoned ship drifted towards Portrush, through the Skerries, where it ran aground at Whiterocks and has remained ever since, no more than a foot of it visible now above the sand, just under the crashing waves. Although no one perished in this wreck, it reminded me of an old maritime superstition that believes that the souls of drowned sailors inhabit the body of the albatross bird. The scarf features an illustration of the albatross wings, designed to be worn shawl style so that the wings are visible across the shoulders and back. There is also ship imagery and the quote ‘All those who wander are not lost’. The colours are taken from the white of the cliffs and the blue of the sea at Whiterocks.
Please note that due to the nature of silk and being printed in small batches that colours can vary slightly, although we try our best to ensure continuity. Due to this and computer/ phone screen settings the colours can look a little different to above.
